Connecticut is the "Constitution State", one of the original thirteen colonies and the fifth state of the union to ratify the Constitution on Jan 9, 1788. Known for its manufacturing, aircraft engine development and home to the Atlantic Submarine Fleet, Connecticut boasts a rich economy. The Connecticut river valley is its primary agricultural area, with tobacco and apples as the main products. Adriaen Block was the first Dutch explorer to visit the area in 1614 and by 1634 the Plymouth Bay settlers had started colonies along the Connecticut River. Connecticut boasts many tourist attractions, including the Mark Twain House, the Yale University Art Gallery, Mystic Seaport and the Mystic Sea Life Aquarium. Famous "Nutmeggers" include Ethan Allen, Nathan Hale, Katherine Hepburn, J. Pierpont Morgan, Mark Twain, Noah Webster and Eli Whitney. @
